The Clarendon is the oldest pub in Sunderland and has the longest unbroken licence in the city, dating back to 1753, and the building itself dates to 1690.

The cellar below the pub was originally used as a holding cell for press gangs caught trying to make their way up the River Wear.  Today it is home to the Bull Lane Brewing Company, who make well known ales such as
Nowts a Matta" and "Sauce of the Niall".
